The Plymouth Varsity competed Saturday in the Wawasee Invitational held this year at Maxwelton Golf Club in Syracuse.  Temps in the 30s forced a delay due to frost pushing our start back 30 minutes.  When play began temps were barely 40 with the predicted breezy conditions intensifying.  As the sun beat down the SSW wind grew in velocity.  With the majority of the holes running west to east, the crosswind played a significant role.
The rolling hills and highly contoured raised greens at Maxwelton provided plenty of challenges for our guys on Saturday.  A couple of incredulous pin positions fostered some higher-than-normal numbers and some tales to tell.
Junior Eli Schramm led the Pilgrims in scoring today with a career-best 85.  Eli improved five shots on the second (front) nine.  A highlight for Eli was a par save on the treacherous 6th.  After his birdie putt rimmed out, his ball magically found its way to the fringe some 12 yards away. Riding the momentum he found the fairway on the next hole, put himself in position near the green, and chipped in for birdie.  Eli led the team with 10 of 14 fairways and tied for team-high with 6 greens in regulation.
Junior Ashton Blalock also had a career-best day carding a 102.
Junior Bennett Christy carded an 87. He was solid with the flat stick needing only 29 putts, best on the team, and no three-putts today, also a team-best.
Senior Kyle Johnson 92 got off to a hot start, with a good birdie on 17 to make the turn at +6.  Kyle’s putting was strong today with several one-putts and only one three-putt.
Senior Owen Yoder carded a 92.  After a quadruple bogey on 10 and triple on 11 to start the day Owen ripped off 5 straight pars. Owen bounced back on the next hole #7 with a birdie, followed by a triple on #8, and a round finishing birdie on #9.
The Pilgrim JV traveled to Battle Ground on Saturday to compete in the Lafayette Jeff JV Invitational.  Our young guys fought the wind and challenging course finishing 15th overall.
Both squads are next in action Monday when they host LaPorte and Chesterton at Pretty Lake.
