Pilgrims News · PILGRIM BASKETBALL FACES VALPO

The Plymouth Lady Pilgrim Basketball teams faced Valparaiso Saturday in their annual three game day as all levels play one another during the weekend before Thanksgiving.  Last year was a memorable varsity game as senior Cece Robinson hit a buzzer beater to down the Lady Vikings and lead the Pilgrims to a three game sweep of Valparaiso.

This year the Pilgrims won two of the three games.  They won the C team and JV contests but they fell in the varsity contest 58-53 after staging a furious comeback in the second half.

The Pilgrims looked down and out late in the first half as they trailed 34-16 at one point in the game.  The Lady Viking defense was causing the Pilgrims havoc as quality shots were difficult to find.  Offensively the Vikings were using the perimeter game to build a solid first half lead as they canned four 3-pointers.

The Pilgrims started making a dent in the Viking lead in the third quarter as they outscored Valparaiso 16-13 but still trailed in the contest 47-34.  A full court defense by the Pilgrims started pushing the Vikings back on their heels.  Midway through the fourth quarter the Lady Pilgrims had chopped the Valpo lead down to 50-45.

Another “3” by Valpo upped their lead to 53-45 but a pair of Alaina Clady free throws and a Claire Tanner driving bucket knocked the Valpo lead down to 53-49 with 2:39 remaining in the contest.  After another Pilgrim defensive stop the ladies in red had a chance to knock the Viking lead down even further.

Sydni Weir, who lead the Pilgrims with 18 points on the night, netted a bucket that would inch the Pilgrims closer at 53-51 with 1:09 remaining in the non-conference contest.  A Pilgrim foul sent Valparaiso to the free throw line where they canned one of two upping their lead to 54-51 with 1:00 to go.

The Pilgrims now had a chance to tie with a 3-pointer.  The Pilgrims worked the ball to Tanner who had an open look for a “3” in the left corner with :32 seconds remaining.  The ball bounced on the rim twice before falling off into the hands of Valpo.

The Vikings hit four free throws over the last 30 seconds to pull out their third victory in the young season over the Pilgrims 58-53.

Weir’s 18 points and six rebounds lead all Pilgrims in those categories.  Tanner added 13 points, three assists, and five rebounds.  Clady popped for seven points while Mary Kate Flynn and Clare Sheedy each added six points.

The loss drops the Pilgrims to 4-2 on the season.  The Pilgrims are right back at it Monday night as they travel to Logansport to take on the Lady Berries.  JV start time is 6:00.

The JV Pilgrims stayed undefeated as they took down Valpo 38-32.  Kenzie Dejarnatt had 10 points while Tallulah Gault and Taylor Delp added eight points each.  The win pushes their record to 5-0.

The C team Pilgrims downed Valpo 27-10.  Megyn Mann lead the defensive charge for the Pilgrims.  Halle Hopple had nine points while teammate Claire McDonald added eight points.  The win moves their record to 3-1.  The young Pilgrims now have some time off as they do not play again until Thursday, 12/5/19 when the host Goshen.
