The Lady Pilgrim Basketball team opened their 2019-2020 season by taking their show on the road Tuesday night to South Bend Washington High School.  In a tightly played ballgame, the Pilgrims defeated the Washington Panthers 47-46.

Washington took an 11-8 lead at the end of one period but the Pilgrims lead 19-18 at halftime.  The teams played even in the second half 28-28 making the Pilgrims end on top by a point in the opening game for both teams.  On the final possession of the game with the Pilgrims leading 47-46, Washington had the ball out-of-bounds in the full court.  They missed a possible game winner and the Pilgrims held on for the win.

Senior Claire Tanner lead the Pilgrims with 13 points.  She also added three assists and four rebounds.  Sydni Weir chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds, and two steals.   Alaina Clady had eight points and 10 rebounds while Emma Cook had six points and hustled for six rebounds.  Clare Sheedy had eight points and pulled down five rebounds.

As a team, the Pilgrims only committed 10 turnovers which is a good number for the first game of the year.  They only shot 39% from the field, 22% from the three-point line, and 55% from the free throw line.  Those numbers will need to improve as the season progresses.

Next up for the Pilgrims they head to New Prairie Thursday night.  JV start time is set for 6:00 PM (EST).
