Pilgrims News · LADY PILGRIM BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON TONIGHT

The Plymouth Lady Pilgrim Basketball team opens their season tonight at South Bend Washington High School.  It is a varsity game only as Washington does not have enough players to field any other levels of girls basketball.  Game time is set for 7:00 PM at the Great Western Forum on the campus of South Bend Washington.

The Pilgrims, fresh off their, 2019 Sectional Championship last year, return four players that played considerable minutes for the Varsity Pilgrims last year.  5-7 senior point guard Claire Tanner leads the returners.  She is the only starter returning as the Pilgrims lost four seniors to graduation last year.  Halle Reichard (1001 career points), Cece Robinson (475 career points), Cassidy Holiday (391 career points), and Kacee Peters (215 career points) have all moved on with their lives beyond basketball.  Tanner averaged over eight points per game last year for the Pilgrims.  She also lead the team in assists last year with three per game.  6-0 senior Alaina Clady also returns to give the Pilgrims a post presence inside.  Clady averaged five points per game off the bench for the Pilgrims.

Other returnees include 5-6 senior guard Mary Kate Flynn, 5-5 senior guard, Sydni Weir, and 5-7 junior guard Lindsay Janus.  Weir and Janus both hit buzzer beaters last year for the Pilgrims.  Janus hit a “3” at the buzzer to down Glenn 47-46 in OT.  Weir drilled the sectional championship game winning “3” vs Elkhart Central with less a second to go for the Pilgrims in a thrilling 54-53 victory.  The Pilgrims finished last year with a 20-5 record.

New “Faces in the Crowd” for the Pilgrims this year include 5-3 junior guard Emma Cook, 5-8 junior guard/forward Kenzie DeJarnatt, and 5-10 forward Clare Sheedy.  Others hoping to get minutes with the big girls include 5-9 sophomore forward Sara Hunter, 5-9 junior forward Tallulah Gault, and 5-8 sophomore guard Madie Mann.

The Pilgrim Varsity has 22 games scheduled for this year.  There are no changes to their schedule this year.  Their home opener is scheduled for Thursday, 11/21/19 when they host county rival Triton.  They will be playing in the 4A Michigan City IHSAA Sectional this year during the week of 2/3/20.

The Pilgrims are once again coached by Dave Duncan.  “Dunc” is in his 8th year leading the Pilgrims.  The long-time coach has a career record of 101-63.  He is assisted again by Marc Hayden, Austen Black, and Brandi Sullivan.
