Pilgrims News · PILGRIMS FALL TO PENN IN IHSAA REGIONAL

The Lady Pilgrim Basketball team hung tough for a half against undefeated and 2nd ranked Penn Saturday at LaPorte in the IHSAA Regional.  The Pilgrims trailed 20-14 after 16 minutes of play.  But a spirited defensive effort by the Lady Kingsmen held the Pilgrims down in the second half leading Penn to a 47-28 victory.

The Penn pressure defense turned up the heat limiting the Pilgrims to just 1-6 from the field in the third quarter and caused six turnovers.  Penn outscored the Pilgrims 13-3 in the pivotal quarter and the Pilgrims trailed 33-17 heading into the final eight minutes.

The highlight of the day was senior Halle Reichard reaching the 1000 career point total late in the contest.  Halle hit a field goal with just over a minute to play to reach the milestone.  She becomes just the second Pilgrim to reach that plateau as she joins Hunter Stevens as the only Pilgrims with 1000 or more career points.

Cassidy Holiday and Reichard lead the Pilgrim scorers with nine and seven points in the contest respectively.  Claire Tanner added five points, Cece Robinson had four points, and Sydni Wier hit three free throws.

The Pilgrims finish the season with a 20-6 record.  To their credit, they became the first Pilgrim team to win a 4A IHSAA Sectional tournament of any kind since the Pilgrims moved up a class back during the 2013-2014 season.  This includes the sports of volleyball, boy’s basketball, girl’s basketball, baseball, and softball.  The season was also the first time since 2009 the Pilgrims had secured at least 20 victories in one year.

The Pilgrims graduate four seniors from the 2018-2019 squad.  This includes Holiday, Kacee Peters, Reichard, and Robinson.

In the Regional championship game played Saturday night, undefeated Crown Point downed previously unbeaten Penn 54-47 in overtime.
