The Lady Pilgrim Basketball team hope their story book season continues through the IHSAA Regional Saturday at LaPorte. According to the experts, the Lady Pilgrim team only had a 5% chance of winning the Sectional last week at Northridge. But the Pilgrims won three games by a total of five points, and pulled two upsets in winning Sectional 4.
Next up though, is a bigger test. The Pilgrims enter Regional play with a 20-5 record. They actually have the worst record among the four teams playing Saturday. Game 1 is scheduled to tip off at 11:00 AM (EST). The Pilgrims play heavily favored Penn. The Lady Kingsmen enter the game as the #2 rated team in 4A basketball. They also bring with them a 24-0 record. Game 2 features #13 Kankakee Valley at 20-4 against undefeated #4 Crown Point at 26-0. The combined record of the four teams in the LaPorte Regional is 90-9. This Regional has the best combined record of all 16 Regionals in Indiana being played Saturday.
Penn is lead by four underclassmen. Sophomre Trinity Clinton leads the Lady Kingsmen in scoring and rebounding at 15 PPG and seven RPG. Junior Reganne Pate hits for 13 PPG while sophomore Jordyn Smith is averaging 11 PPG. Junior Antreese Shleton is grabbing five boards per game.
The closest game Penn has had this year was against the Pilgrims’ most recent opponent. Back on 1/5/19, Penn battled Elkhart Central to a one point victory 50-49. The Pilgrims downed Central Saturday in the Sectional championship game 54-53.
It seems like the Pilgrims have a different hero every game. They have had five games this year where a bucket at or near the final buzzer gave the Pilgrims a victory including two games in the sectional. Cece Robinson had a rebound bucket at the buzzer to down Valpo. Kacee Peters had a steal and a bucket with three seconds remaining to beat Goshen. Lindsay Janus had a “3” at the buzzer to down Glenn. Halle Reichard had a buzzer beater in the second overtime to down Northridge in the first round of the Sectional. And finally Sydni Weir hit “The Shot” heard ’round the State to down Elkhart Central in the Sectional Championship game.
The Pilgrims enter the Regional on an 8 game winning streak. They have not lost since 1/8/19. And where did that loss occur? On the floor they are playing on Saturday at LaPorte. The Pilgrims are currently playing their best basketball of the year. They come in with a great attitude and a NEVER SAY DIE attitude. We wish the Lady Pilgrims the very best of luck in their quest for a Regional Championship!
If you cannot make it over to LaPorte on Saturday both AM1050 WTCA and MAX98.3 will be on hand to broadcast the Kingsmen/Pilgrim contest.
