The Plymouth Lady Pilgrim Basketball team will be playing in an IHSAA Basketball Sectional Championship Game for the very first time since they moved up to Class 4A.  The last time they played in a sectional championship game was back in 2013 when they won a Class 3A sectional.

The road to this championship game has not been easy.  But the Pilgrims have been able to take down host Northridge in double overtime Friday night 57-54 on a Halle Reichard “3”.  Then the Pilgrims slipped by Concord 37-36 Saturday night.  The win Saturday night moved the Lady Pilgrims to 19-5.  The win was also Coach Dave Duncan’s 100th career win.  Duncan is in his 7th year as Head Coach of the Pilgrims.

Next up is the sectional favorite and the #10 ranked team in 4A Elkhart Central.  The Blue Blazers enter the game with an 18-6 record.  Common opponents include Concord, Northwood, Northridge, New Prairie, Glenn, Elkhart Memorial, Mishawaka Marian, Goshen, and Warsaw.  The Pilgrims ended 8-3 against this group as they defeated Northridge and Concord twice each.  Elkhart Central finished 7-2 against this group.  Using the Sagarin Ratings of girl’s basketball teams in Indiana, Elkhart Central is favored Monday night by eight points.  Keep in mind, the Sagarin Ratings also predicted Northridge would beat the Lady Pilgrims twice this year…Wrong and Wrong!!

Elkhart Central did play a couple key games this year against highly ranked teams.  In early January the Lady Blue Blazers hosted Penn.  The Lady Kingsmen are currently 23-0 and ranked #2 in 4A in the State of Indiana.  Penn had their closest game of the year defeating Elkhart Central 50-49.

Central also played Center Grove in late December.  Center Grove is coached by 2001 Plymouth graduate Kevin Stuckmeyer.  Center Grove is currently ranked #8 in 4A.  They won their sectional Saturday night moving their record to 22-3 on the year.  Center Grove defeated Elkhart Central 52-48 in overtime.

Elkhart Central has two girls averaging in double figures this year.  Kaitlyn Costner is hitting for 16 PPG while Trinity Harris is knocking down over 13 PPG.  Harris is also dishing four assists per game.

Halle Reichard and Cassidy Holiday are leading the Pilgrims in scoring.  Holiday and Cece Robinson are the top rebounders for the Pilgrims.  Claire Tanner leads the Pilgrims in assists.

Tip off for the championship game at Northridge is scheduled for 7:00 PM Monday night.  If you are unable to attend, AM1050 WTCA will be there covering the action for you.
