Pilgrims News · LADY PILGRIMS TAKE DOUBLE OT SECTIONAL WIN

The Plymouth Lady Pilgrim Basketball team did something twice in the last eight days that many people did not think they could do one time.  That was defeat the NLC Champ Northridge Raiders.  Last Thursday the Pilgrims downed Northridge in the last NLC game of the year 47-45 knocking them from being undefeated in NLC play.

Then they did it again Friday night at Northridge in double OT 57-54.  This sectional game had been delayed three days by weather.  The Pilgrims were only able to practice one time in the last five days.  But somehow they were able to confound the experts and knock off the Sectional 4 co-favorites Friday night.

The Pilgrims took their biggest lead of the game at 15-10 early in the second quarter.  Over the last six minutes of the first half the Pilgrims were outscored by Northridge 16-5 as the Pilgrims had several turnovers and lost their aggressiveness.

Coach Dave Duncan used his halftime to get the Pilgrims to pick up their game.  It worked as the Plymouth girls were tied with Northridge at the end of three quarters 30-30.

From that point on neither team could gain a huge advantage as the biggest lead by either team was three points.  The teams were tied at 43 at the end of regulation.

The Pilgrims thought they had the game wrapped up in the first overtime but the Raiders hit a long three with four seconds left to send the game into a second overtime tied at 50-50.

The game in the second overtime came down to the Pilgrims last possession.  With the score tied at 54-54, the Pilgrims gained possession with 40 seconds remaining.  They worked the ball to leading scorer Halle Reichard.  Halle spotted up in the corner and let it fly from “3” point range.  It was nothing but net as the ball settled through the basket with three seconds remaining.

Junior Claire Tanner lead the Pilgrim scorers with 15 points.  Cece Robinson added 14 points, three assists, and eight rebounds.  Reichard and Kacee Peters added seven points each.  Cassidy Holiday hauled down six rebounds.

The win pushes the Pilgrims to 18-5 on the year.  It also send the Pilgrims into the semi finals Saturday night against Concord.  Tip off is scheduled for 6:00.  The Pilgrims defeated Concord 48-43 back on 1/12/20.
