The Plymouth Lady Rockie Soccer team came up big when they had to Thursday night at Don Kindt Soccerplex. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Rockies used a Madison Stiles goal on a pass from Lindsay Janus 14 minutes into the second half to tie things up. They ended up winning on PK’s 2-1 over Mishawaka Marian advancing to the sectional championship game Saturday afternoon.
The game remained tied through regulation and the two seven minute overtime periods even though the Rockies were one player down through the final 16 minutes of play because of a red card. After the scoreless overtimes, the game goes to PK’s. PK’s are a one-on-one match between a kicker on one team the the goalkeeper for the opposing team. The kicker gets to shoot from 12 yards away from the goal.
Madison Smith was up first for the Rockies. She kicked one top right corner and the Rockies lead in PK’s 1-0. Rockie goalie Cece Robinson came up huge on the first Marian kick. Cece dove full length to her left in stopping the attempted PK. Aubrey Vervynckt was next for the Rockies, and she also put one past the Marian goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. Marian then was able to get one past Cece and it was 2-1.
It remained that way until the fifth and final kicker for both teams. Senior goalie Cece Robinson was chosen as the fifth and final Rockie kicker. She had never had a varsity soccer goal in her life as she has always been the goalkeeper. A make would give the Rockies the victory. Cece’s kick easily made it past the Marian goalkeeper and jubilant Rockie teammates met on the field to celebrate the semi-final victory.
Next up is the IHSAA Sectional Championship game as the Rockies will host South Bend St. Joe, the defending sectional champions. Start time is set for 2:00 PM.
A reminder to fans attending the game, the PHS band is hosting a large contest Saturday. The normal parking lot and gate will not be available. Please park in the amphitheater parking lot west of the soccerplex and enter the west gate.
