Sophomore PHS Gymnast Kyla Heckaman will be representing The Big Red at the IHSAA Gymnastics Regional on Saturday. The competition will take place at Huntington North High School. Start time is set for 12:00 PM. Sectionals from Fort Wayne Concordia and Wawasee will feed into this regional site.
Kyla qualified for the regional in the All-Around competition. She finished in 5th place overall by scoring a 35.025. The top six competitors in the All-Around at the sectional advanced to regional competition.
Kyla’s sectional scores included an 8.250 on the vault, 8.575 on the bars, 9.150 on the beam, and a 9.050 on the floor exercise. The beam and floor exercise events have consistently been the top two events throughout the winter season for Kyla.
The next round of competition after the IHSAA Regional is the State Finals. In order to qualify for the finals, Kyla will have to finish in the top six in scoring in any one of the individual events, or finish in the top six in the All-Around.
Even if she does not finish in the top six on any event, there is another way to qualify if her scores are high enough. If Kyla were to score at least a 9.50 on the vault, a 9.55 on the bars, a 9.45 on the floor exercise, or a 9.225 on the beam she would also qualify. These were the scores achieved by the 6th place finisher in the State Finals last year.
The IHSAA State Finals in gymnastics will take place at Worthen Arena on the campus of Ball State University on Saturday, 3/10/18 starting at 1:00 PM. The last Lady Pilgrim to qualify for the State Finals was Cassi Quissell in 2015. She qualified for the All-Around competition with her 2nd place finish at the Huntington North Regional. Cassi finished in 15th place at the State Finals with a score of 36.400.
