The Plymouth Rockie Wrestling team participated in the IHSAA Semi-State at East Chicago Central High School Saturday. Six Rockie Wrestlers represented Plymouth High School. Team scores are also kept at this individual event. 40 different schools were represented here with the Rockies finishing in 11th place scoring 34.5 points.
Rockie wrestler Dominic Smith started the day off at 106 lbs. He fell to a Lafayette Harrison wrestler in a 1:25 pin. Dominic finishes his successful freshman season with a 28-11 record.
Senior Zane DeVault was up next at 126 lbs. He also fell in a very close decision 5-4 to a Delphi wrestler. Zane finishes his very successful wrestling career for Plymouth with a 37-6 record.
Next was senior Gavin Banks at 145 lbs. He won his first round match 4-2 over his Hobart opponent. He fell in his second round match in a 9-4 decision to a Chesterton grappler. Gavin finished his Rockie wrestling career with a 34-10 record.
Sophomore Graham Calhoun at 152 lbs. was next. Graham won his first round match in a major decision 17-2 over his Highland opponent. He pinned his Lowell opponent next in :48 sending him into the semi-final match. Graham fell for the first time this year to a Portage wrestler 2-1 putting him in a third place match. Graham won his 3rd place match 4-2 over his Mishawaka opponent. By finishing third, this qualifies Graham for the State Finals for the second consecutive year. He will take a 45-1 record to Indianapolis Friday night.
Sophomore Blake Davis wrestling at 182 lbs. was next for the Rockies. He lost his first round match to the eventual champion from Chesterton in a 2:26 pin. Blake finishes the year 18-10.
Senior Nate LaFree wrestling for the Rockies at 220 lbs. was the final wrestler representing the Big Red. Nate won his first round match over his Kankakee Valley opponent in a :47 pin. He decisioned his second round opponent from Munster 11-7. Nate decisioned a LaPorte wrestler in the third round 7-4 sending him into the championship match against the #2 ranked wrestler in Indiana. Nate was pinned in the championship match finishing second. Nate will head to the State Finals next Friday night with a 40-4 record.
